Textual Analysis: Jimmy Eat World- The Middle

This song is about how being different is a good thing. It is good not to be like everyone else and to conform to what they are doing. The narrative of this video consists of a girl and a boy at a house party. They don't know each other and have not met yet, so they each feel like outsider because they are not dressed or are acting like everyone else.
The lyrics and the video link very closely as the narrative in the video is showing why they meant by the lyrics. "Hey, you know they're all the same. You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in."  These lyrics show the view of the band and also the genre of music that this song is. They are saying it is good to be different and rebellious which is a common convention of the rock/indie rock genre of music.

In terms of cinematography there are many different angles and framing used in order the portray the narrative in a particular way:

  • There is a close track following the boy and it is a medium close up of him. You can already see that he is different from the others already. The main identification is the fact that he is wearing clothes unlike the others teenagers.
  • The next cut then goes to a long shot to everyone else at the party looking at him in a negative way because he stands out.
  • Then showing close ups of how they are reacting to the way he is dressed, showing the audience he is different.
  • The last screen shot shows the boy standing alone, the fact he is also stood in the dark to show how he a outcast because he is on his own in the dark whilst the other teenagers are in the light of the room.
There are many different shots and locations within the house (the rooms in the house- bedroom, kitchen etc). But mainly there are only two locations: outside the house and then in the house where the party is. This could be to interest a younger audience because it a lifestyle a they may experience often.

The reason for this narrative is so the audience could relate to the video if they are in a similar situation. To show them that it might feel wrong and bad to be different but in the end everything will work itself out.

The editing for this music video is very fast paced. In just the chorus alone there is twelve different edits. Most of them being either a close up or a medium close up. This is to focus on the expressions on their faces and also so you can identify the characters in the narrative and the band who are performing within the narrative.
There are cuts which keep going to the band. Its a creative idea to involve them in the narrative. They are dressed differently and you can easily notice this. This is so it differentiates them from the narrative even though they are performing at the 'Party' which is where the narrative is happening.

There is a fade to a dark screen at the end of the video this is to show it is the end of the narrative and the video, the sound of the instruments also stopped abruptly reinforcing the end of the song.

During this shot of the video a girl jumps into water. When she is fully submerged the sound of the song goes quieter and muffled. This will be to resemble what she is hearing. Making the audience feel like they are more involved in the song, feeling like they are actually at the party doing what she is doing. Then the song becomes louder again as it goes back to the room where the party in fun and chaotic.

During this video there are not many costume changes, there are the people dressed in their underwear and then the boy and the band who are the ones wearing clothes. This doesn't change throughout the video until the end where he finally feels he needs to change to fit in and goes upstairs to take his clothes off.

Where he then realizes he doesn't need to and 'meets' a girl who is in the same situation.
The use of lighting in this clip in effective as it shows both people looking up. Even though there is a wall in between them it is like they are looking at each other.
He is shown in the dark whilst she is in the light, which could be suggesting that she is "his light at the end of the tunnel" (or closet).

There is then a cut showing them leaving the house together.

Jimmy Eat World are signed to a record labelled 'Fueled by Ramen'. This record label also has other famous bands signed to it such as Paramore and Fall Out Boy. This shows the similarities in the bands music and it supports the conventions of the Rock genre of music.
This also means that the label will be able to advertise both bands with each other. For example if Paramore had a concert they could use Jimmy Eat World and the first act. This would then get them more publicity and wider audience especially the fans of Paramore or Fall Out Boy etc.

The main target audience of this band is going to be a younger audience most probably 16-25 age range. This is shown because of the style of songs they produce and the narratives they use in their music videos.
This video in particular will definitely be reaching out to a younger audience as the characters featured in the narrative are young and look like school or college students. Therefore meaning that a younger audience will be able to relate to the song easier than an older audience would be able to. That is why the Mise-en-scene including the props and locations such as a house party being the focus of the narrative is used because the institution knows what audience would most likely enjoy and purchase this song.
